US Worlds Team Scores - 2022

Updated: Jun 25, 2024

Now that the US has named the gymnasts who are on the Worlds team we can do some official calculations for potential worlds team final scores. The gymnasts named to the team are Shilese Jones through an automatic qualifying spot after placing 1st All-Around on Day 1 of the worlds team selection camp, Jade Carey, Jordan Chiles, Skye Blakely, and Leanne Wong. This is a team that no one is really surprised with especially after Skye Blakely hit her beam with a massive score of 14.55 on Day 2 of worlds selection camp.

Using Top Scores

Using each of these gymnasts top scores from 2022 on each event the 3-up-3-count team would score a 171.8.

Vault: Jade Carey (14.8), Shilese Jones (14.55), Leanne Wong (14.4)

Uneven Bars: Shilese Jones (14.85), Jordan Chiles (14.35), Leanne Wong (14.25)

Balance Beam: Blakely (14.55), Wong (13.75), Carey (13.75)

Floor: Jones (14.25), Chiles (14.25), Carey (14.05)

This team may not be the best option in the qualifications though since our top two all-around gymnasts are Shilese Jones and Jordan Chiles. Chiles could be added as 4th on vault in qualifications; however, with balance beam someone would need to be removed to have both Jones and Chiles compete for a chance at an all-around finals placement. Removing either Wong or Blakely would make the most sense to also give Carey a shot at an all-around finals if either Jones or Chiles makes mistakes.

Using Average Scores

Next I took the average scores of each gymnast on each event to give a more realistic team score, since typically there are some mistakes and not everyone is going to perform their absolute best at the same time. Using the top 3 average scores on each event gives a team score of 167.2516.

Vault: Carey (14.6305), Jones (14.4875), Wong (14.275)

Uneven Bars: Jones (14.3395), Chiles (13.9809), Blakely (13.85)

Balance Beam: Blakely (13.625), Chiles (13.51), Carey (13.3476)

Floor: Chiles (13.8833), Jones (13.7309), Carey (13.5915)

With this team Chiles would again be added as a 4th vaulter in qualifications, possibly Carey or Wong on bars, Jones on beam, and Blakely on floor.

To get a more accurate look at scoring potential I took the average scores of the gymnasts excluding their highest and lowest scores. This would give a team score of 167.989 utilizing the following athletes.

Vault: Carey (14.6708), Jones (14.5), Blakely (14.3)

Uneven Bars: Jones (14.4443), Wong (14.0333), Chiles (14.0232)

Balance Beam: Chiles (13.55), Blakely (13.5), Wong (13.3667)

Floor: Chiles (13.9125), Jones (13.8632), Carey (13.825)

Using Low Scores

In the rare event every gymnast has a particularly bad day, I calculated the team score using the top 3 lowest scores for each gymnast on every event. This team would score 161.716.

Vault: Jones (14.4), Carey (14.3), Blakely (14.2)

Uneven Bars: Blakely (13.45), Carey (13.45), Chiles (13.4)

Balance Beam: Chiles (13.3), Blakely (12.95), Carey (12.9)

Floor: Chiles (13.4), Blakely (13.3), Carey (12.666)

This definitely has some people on the team finals that probably wouldn't be put up in this scenario though, but is an interesting calculation. From this we can see Jones is a little risky. She does extremely well when she hits, but when she doesn't it's an issue.

Closing Thoughts

The most likely scenario for qualifications is probably Jones, Chiles, Carey, and Wong for vault; Jones, Chiles, Wong, and Carey/Blakely for uneven bars; Jones, Chiles, Carey, Blakely for balance beam; and Jones, Chiles, Carey, and Wong/Blakely for floor. This gives Jones, Chiles, and Carey a shot at all-around finals; Jones and Wong a shot for uneven bars finals; and Blakely a shot for balance beam finals. For finals it just depends how everyone looks there on the day...
