Analysis of 2022 US Championships - Overall Results

Updated: Oct 26, 2022

All-around and event scores from Day 1 and Day 2 added together for the overall placements. This is a visual representation for the scores to see how each gymnast fairs compared to the rest in an easier to digest format than just noting scores.

All-Around

All-Around

The all-around scores (top figure: grey) show there are 6 athletes that have broken away from the rest of the remaining athletes with scores around 110 or higher for the two days of competition combined. Konnor McClain with a 112.75, Shilese Jones with a 112, Jordan Chiles with a 111.65, Kayla Dicello with a 110.95, Jade Carey with a 110.9, and Sloane Blakely with a 109.5. The rest of the pack trails off with a jump down in all-around scores.

Event Scores

Vault

The Vault scores (top left: red) show fairly consistent vault scores with most scores higher than other events. This is typically due to the execution scores consistently being higher than other events which will be examined in another future post. This is showing just vault scores for the first vault and not the two different vaults that are necessary for a vault medal. The only gymnasts to perform two vaults at this competition were Jade Carey, the vault title winner, and Roberson, the runner up. However when looking at vault scores useful for a team event competition, Jade Carey is a clear front runner. Shilese Jones also has a higher vault score compared to the rest of the athletes. Konnor McClain, Jordan Chiles, Sloane Blakely, Amelia Disidore, and Kayla Dicello all have very close scores ranging from 28.75 for McClain to 28.5 for Dicello, so just a 0.25 difference between 3rd and 7th. Thus all of them would be a good choice for a 3rd vault score within a team competition, at least based scores from this competition.

Uneven Bars

For uneven bars (top right: orange) three gymnasts clearly jump out from the rest. The gymnasts are Shilese Jones and Leanne Wong tied with a 28.45 for the bars title and Jordan Chiles behind by 1 tenth with a 28.35. The rest are a little farther off the top three. Uneven bars also has the widest spread in scores. The highest being 28.45 and the lowest being 22.1. So from this competition it definitely looks like some of the elite gymnasts could really work on their bars to improve their all-around chances.

Balance Beam

The balance beam (bottom left: blue) results show that Konnor McClain is really above the rest of the gymnasts with her score of a 28.9. If we are looking for beamers for a team competition though the next three gymnasts in 2-4th place are rather close. Ciena Alipio follows McClain with a 27.55, then Kayla Dicello 2 tenths behind with a 27.35, and Chiles with 27.05.

Floor Exercise

Floor exercise (bottom right: purple) shows Shilese Jones with a 28.35 has a bit of an edge over her competitors even Jade Carey, the reigning Olympic floor champion who came in 2nd with 27.9. 3rd place McClain, 4th place Chiles, and 5th place Dicello are also very close to the top.

Worlds Team Predictions

Now using the scores from this competition and dividing them by 2 to take the average of their Day 1 and Day 2 scores, the possible 2022 Worlds team considering a three up three count scenario could be one of the following possibilities.

Taking the top 5 from the all-around standings: McClain, Jones, Chiles, DiCello, and Carey would give a team score of 169.475.

Vault: Carey, Jones, McClain

Bars: Jones, Chiles, DiCello

Beam: McClain, DiCello, Chiles

Floor: Jones, Carey, McClain

Replacing Kayla DiCello with Wong who had a higher placement on bars would give a slightly higher team score of 169.5 though. We don't know the status of Wong's injury though at this time, but if she is healthy the team could use her.

Vault: Carey, Jones, McClain

Bars: Jones, Wong, Chiles

Beam: McClain, Chiles, Wong

Floor: Jones, Carey, McClain

Since we are unsure of DiCello's desire to go to Worlds over focusing on college gymnastics and Wong's injury though the next highest scoring team would be 169.45 with Ciena Alipio only doing beam or 169.15 with Nola Matthews only doing bars.

Looking at only the final numbers from this competition it looks like Konnor McClain, Shilese Jones, Jordan Chiles, and Jade Carey are locks on the team thus far with the final person being Leanne Wong, Kayla DiCello, Ciena Alipio or Nola Matthews.
