2025 US Championships

The 2025 season continues with the U.S. Championships in New Orleans, Louisiana! Let's take a look at the results of the competition and who has the potential to go to Worlds this year.

2025 US Championships Score Ranges
2025 US Championships Score Ranges

Vault is the highest scoring/strongest event for USA Gymnastics, same as US Classics, with a median of 27.05 across both days added together - meaning half the gymnasts scored below this and half the gymnasts scored higher than this. The average score for vault is 26.99 for those gymnasts that competed vault both days with an average vault score of 13.50 for all the vaults across both days, a tenth and a half higher than US Classics. Bars was the weakest event for USA gymnastics at US Championships, with the median of 26 being the lowest median across all the events and the highest score being the lowest out of all the event highest scores and an average of 12.979. Beam had major improvements since Classics. The median at Classics was 12.475 with an average score of 12.27. At Championships, beam's average across all scores day 1 and day 2 was 13.05.

To show how Team USA is doing I took the top 3 scores from both days of competition, similar to if there was a team event and added them and compared them to Classics top 3 scores. If one gymnast had both scores in the top 3 across both days the highest score for that gymnast was used and the next gymnast's score was counted.

With this we see an overall increase of greater than 5 points from US Classic to US Championships noting the overall improvement of Team USA's best gymnasts. Those gymnasts in the Top 3 counting scores for Championships are Leanne Wong, Jayla Hang, Hezly Rivera, Skye Blakely, Joscelyn Roberson, and Ashlee Sullivan. Skye Blakely did not compete in Classics which could add to the increase in the bars top 3 score, but the rest of the gymnasts did compete at Classics highlighting the true increase throughout the 2025 season.

The top all-arounder after two days of competition was Hezly Rivera with a score of 112. She had quite the comeback compared to her competition at US Classics where she placed 12th. Both days she scored above a 55 all-around. 2nd place was another veteran Leanne Wong with a 111.20, also with above a 55 all-around both days. 3rd place Joscelyn Roberson scored above a 55 all-around on day 2 of competition and had a 109.6 overall. Another gymnast with above a 55 all-around on one day of the competition was Jayla Hang with the 3rd highest all-around from day 2 of the competition and the 4th highest all-around from all the all-around scores in the competition, but placed 5th overall with adding both days together.

2025 US Championship Vault Scores from Both Days of the Competition
2025 US Championship Vault Scores from Both Days of the Competition

The vault scores above are calculated based on the gymnasts first vaults added together from both days of the competition. In order to medal at the Olympics gymnasts need to perform two vaults each from a different family within the rules. The only gymnasts to perform two vaults at this competition were Wong, Pease, and Stassi. Wong had the highest vault scores for the total score with 28.60, day 2 with 14.60, and the highest score for the official vault competition where gymnasts need to perform the two vaults with a 28.175. Pease placed 2nd with a 27.00 and Stassi placed 3rd with a 26.75.

The gymnast with the highest vault score on day 1 of the competition was Hang with a 14.05 and she also had the 2nd highest vault score combining the two days with a 28.35. She does not compete a second vault though and that is why she did not place 2nd on vault, but when thinking about future teams this vault score could be useful, just not for individual vault medals. Other gymnasts who scored a 14 or above between the two days of competition were Rivera, Pease, Caylor, and Sullivan.

Uneven Bars

Average Individual Score: 12.979

Balance beam improved a lot since US Classic as gymnasts get more comfortable with their upgrades and gain their confidence with more numbers. The average went from 12.27 at Classics to 13.07 at Championships. Rivera was the winner for beam with a 28.35, 14.35 (6.4 difficulty score and 7.95 execution score) on day 1 and 14.00 (6.1 difficulty score and 7.90 execution score) on day 2. Blakely was 2nd with a 27.85, 13.45 (5.8 difficulty score and 7.75 execution score with a -0.1 neutral deduction) on day 1 after touching the beam on her front handspring front tuck, but received a 14.40 (6.3 difficulty score and 8.2 execution score also with a -0.1 neutral deduction) when she hit that routine. Dulcy Caylor and Jayla Hang following closely behind with a 27.75 for a tie for 3rd. Wong (5th) received the two highest execution score with an 8.35 on day 1 and an 8.45 on day 2 with her nearly perfect routines - 1 of 2 gymnasts to receive above an 8.0 execution score on both days of competition. The other gymnast being Hang with an 8.15 and an 8.20. Other gymnasts to receive an 8.0 or better execution score on one day of the competition were Blakely with an 8.2E on day 2 as stated above, Caylor with an 8.10 on day 2, Pease with an 8.10 on day 1, Catherine Guy with an 8.05 on day 2, and Simone Rose and Ally Damelio both with an 8.0 on day 2. Rivera had the highest difficulty score with her 6.4 on day 1 and Blakely had the 2nd highest difficulty score with her 6.3 on day 2. Roberson also had a difficulty score greater than a 6.0D with 6.2 both days.

Rivera was the floor exercise winner with a 28.20. She had a 14.00 (5.8D/8.2E) day 1 and a 14.20 (5.8D/8.4E) on day 2. Roberson (2nd) had the highest difficulty score with a 6.5 - 0.6 tenths higher than her difficulty score at US Classics. Gabrielle Hardie (4th) had the two highest execution scores with an 8.55 on day 1 and an 8.60 on day 2. She was also the highest execution score at Classics with an 8.35 so she is fairly consistent with her execution on floor. Her difficulty score is 5.3 - 0.5 tenth lower than Rivera, 0.6 lower than Sullivan and a 1.2 lower than Roberson so she has some improvements to make in her difficulty if she wants to climb above those placing in front of her. Wong (5th) had the third highest difficulty score at 8.50 but has the same difficulty score issue as Hardie. Esponda has a pretty high difficulty score also with a 5.9 both days, but unfortunately suffered in her execution score for out of bounds deductions both days of competition which moved her down the list from classics to 6th place.

The gymnasts names that appear 3x or more in the top 5 from Classics were Pease (All Events), Rose (Vault, Bars, All-Around), Roberson (Vault, Beam, All-Around). The gymnasts that appear in the top 5 2x from Classics are Caylor (Vault, Bars), Sullivan (Vault, Beam), and Esponda (Floor, All-Around).

Now the gymnasts name that appears 3x or more in the top 5 from Championships are Rivera (Vault, Bars, Beam, Floor, All-Around), Wong (Vault, Bars, Beam, Floor, All-Around), and Sullivan (Vault, Floor, All-around). The gymnasts that appear 2x or more in the top 5 from Championships are Blakely (Bars, Beam), Roberson (Floor, All-around), Hang (Vault, Beam), and Pease (Vault, Bars),

The gymnasts that are on both lists are Pease, Roberson, and Sullivan.

Again the 2025 Worlds will not include a team since it is the year after the Olympics so it will be focused on individual athletes and maximizing individual medals. Only four gymnasts will make it to Worlds for each country. From the lists above and taking past experience into account I think Rivera, Blakely and Wong are pretty well locks for Worlds baring any issues going forward. Roberson would be a solid choice for floor but would be more of a lock if a second vault is added back. If we want a second potential vault medal and Roberson is not ready for a second vault that may put Pease on that world team.

Who do you think will be representing U.S.A. at the World Competition and why?
